Maybe not all bicyclists ride unicycles (most probably don’t) but the opposite is not true. The majority of unicyclists are likely also dedicated bicyclists.
Which means they’re probably familiar with the following bike tools – which are right at home not only working on bikes but unicycles.
The point is that these are both unicycle and bike tools – if you have one or a set of each, there’s no need to get a redundant second (unless you need it, that is).
Tire Levers
Tire levers are used to stretch tires over bike or unicycle wheels without damaging them – which means they are not only valuable but they can be used for both unicycles and bicycles with equal facility.
One good set will serve your whole fleet, no matter how many bikes or unicycles you have.
Crank Pullers
Cranks are cranks, which means that one good crank puller (assuming it is compatible with the style of crank on your bike or unicycle) will serve your aims well. There are special cotterless crank pullers; just make sure you have the type that works for your machines.
Allen Keys
Allen keys are used for a wide, wide range of tasks on both bikes and unicycles. On bikes, Allen keys are used for basically everything that fastens, tightens or adjusts via a hex bolt. They are variously used on the handlebars, seatpost, saddle, and even the drivetrain fixing bolts.
On unicycles, Allen keys are also widely used, on the cranks, seatpost clamp, saddle bolt, and bearing clamp, as well as elsewhere.
Air Pumps
Air pumps are used to maintain your bike and unicycle tires at the appropriate temperature. As you might imagine, one single pump can be used for all your bikes and unicycles.
Pedal Wrenches
Pedal wrenches, which are used to install and remove pedals, can be used on both bikes and unicycles, provided you have the right size.
Spoke Wrenches
Spoke wrenches are used to align a wheel’s spokes so that the wheel runs true, and as you might imagine can be used effectively on both bike and unicycle tires. Pretty much, if it has spokes, a spoke wrench can be used for it.
A Note on Unicycle and Bike Safety Gear
There’s some safety gear that’s preferred by unicycle riders, such as wrist guards and leg armor, but by and large, the safety gear worn by unicycle riders is the same as that worn by bikers.
For instance, helmets, gloves, and knee and elbow pads are worn by riders pursuing both disciplines. A good set of unicycle safety gear will also serve you well as bicycle safety gear, no need to double up.
