Last night, Byron Shire had some brief but dramatic weather periods, with Byron appearing to be covered in snow.

The streets and footpaths of Byron turned white just before 7pm as a hail storm hit the town as a storm cell passed through.

Just before seven, I was passing through the town when the hail started to fall. Local resident Geoff Bensley noted that the hail this time was quite little.

The storm's focal point was Byron Bay, and it also affected nearby neighbourhoods and the well-known surf spot The Pass at Cape Byron's base.

She said on social media, "Fifteen people were sheltering behind the BBQ shelter, so thick and loud the hail and rain."
